Dennis Allen and Betty Nicolicchia-Allen

Five children—G., a 14-year-old girl, and siblings ages 12, 9, 8, and 6—were abused and neglected by their parents, Dennis Allen and Betty Nicolicchia-Allen. The children were homeschooled.

G. reported that “she was being homeschooled but wasn’t taught anything.” Instead, while Allen and Nicolicchia-Allen worked full-time, they forced G. to be a full-time caregiver for her siblings, as well as for six animals in the home. They kept the home in “deplorable” conditions, with no running water, an overflowing toilet, rotting food, animal urine and feces, and insects. G. also reported that her mother physically and emotionally abused her.

The abuse came to light when G. called an abuse hotline to report that she was considering suicide. The hotline alerted authorities to the conditions in the home. Allen and Nicolicchia-Allen were charged with child neglect.
